Paulette's Photos .. the post-reunion tour 2007

Thursday 30th August

Another breakfast and a last photo-shoot around Chateau Lake Louise. With clues from helpful staff we tracked down John St Armaud and had a chat. Our drive toward Calgary took in Lake Minnewanka and Two Jack Lake. Evening back in Vancouver comprised dinner with Mark and packing up for the journey home.

Wednesday 29th August

The Poppy Restaurant provided us with breakfast It was then into the car and a visit to Moraine Lake set in the Valley of the Ten Peaks .. here we secured our first photos of wildlife .. a chipmunk was doing some begging amongst the tourists. Then onto the Icefields Parkway heading toward Jasper to explore as far as Peyto Lake. Heading back we stopped for lunch at Num-Ti-Jah Lodge at Bow Lake and glacier.

Tuesday 28th August

After breakfast we took a walk down to find my old room and a last look around the hotel. Driving out, we went to Sulphur Mountain and rode on the Banff Gondola to the summit.

Then it was onto the Bow Valley Parkway road toward Chateau Lake Louise. On arrival there, David Bayne had arranged for us to have a great room overlooking the lake and a gift of treats waiting for us. Unfortunately we didnt get to see David to convey our thanks in person since he was leaving on his honeymoon today. We visited the Fairview Restaurant to dine appreciating the lake and the mountain views.

Monday 27th August

After an energizing breakfast at the Bow Valley Grill  (where my office used to be! ) we headed off to Banff. The main street is not as picturesque as it was and will be in a few months!

At 3pm we joined Dave Moberg's heritage tour of the castle. Dave's knowledge of the Hotel's history and his humour all made for a wonderful hour of enlightenment. Afterwards he showed us more of the particular parts of the hotel that I could ( or couldn't) recall. Then it was Mount Rundle Lounge for a marguerita and snacks, but food & drink were secondary to the the million-dollar view.

Sunday 26th August

Roadworks made the geography of Calgary difficult to navigate simply but eventualllllly we were scooting along the trans-canadian highway in the right direction and almost on the correct side of the road. Paulette needed a strong coffee at Bianca's cafe at Braggs Creek!

Arriving at a fully booked Banff Springs Hotel we found that Dave Moberg had kindly ensured that we had a room with a view .. after settling in, we headed ( in the rain ) to the Waldhaus Restaurant with a short wander afterwards.

Saturday 25th August

A day of travelling as we left Vancouver and flew to Calgary. Set off from the airport in a Ford Focus to terrorise the locals and made it to our apartment in the middle of town. Had an enjoyable evening at the Muse restaurant in the company of Rob and Laurie Milthorp and now looking forward to our drive to Banff tomorrow.

Friday 24th August

Jean Haugan made a long journey into the city for lunch and catching up , then we headed down to the Gaslight area to check out Mark's appartment, and then onto the Sea-Bus to North Vancouver to David & Candace Freestone's home in North Vancouver for a delicious dinner and enjoyable evening with their family Brian & Ellen, Karen & Morgana, and Auntie Joan.

Thursday 23rd August

A day of renewing acquaintances with a musical interlude to finish off. Peter Grubwieser and Uschi came in to the Fairmont for a chat and refreshment.

Around 8.30pm we met Mark at the Wise Hall in Adanac Street ( canada spelt backwards!) for a Mark Berube concert to launch his 'What the river gave the boat' CD. Fran kept a table for us and introduced us to family and friends.

Wednesday 22nd August

On our last day in Victoria Helene drove us down to where Paul had moored his yacht and they spoilt uswith a sail / motor around the waterways of Vancouver Island. Then it was off in the float plane back to Vancouver.

Tuesday 21st August

Helene packed us in her VW Golf and  showed us the sights en-route and in Victoria. That night we returned with Patrick & Doreen to see the lights of Victoria

Monday 20th August

Patrick & Doreen picked us up from Helene's and we went straight (almost) to Kent and Yvette's home, and then set off on a tour north of Victoria on the Trans Canada Highway visiting Chemainus. The day ended with a wonderful evening at Kent & Yvettes.

 Sunday 19th August

An early start to join the 'Prince of Whales' whale spotting boat journey to Victoria .. we were fortunate to spot some specimens in clear weather.

Patrick & Doreen and Kent & Yvette met us at Victoria and took us down to lunch with Helene & Paul.

Mariann also joined us there.

Saturday 18th August

The morning began with a walk down Robson Street and then met up with Mark for a coffee in the Bojangles cafe below the first apartment he stayed at in Vancouver. Then a visit to Paulette's apartment block at 1246 Haro Street in the West End.

Car tour via the Lions Gate bridge to West Vancouver where we enjoyed the seascape, then a look at the outside of Mark's new apartment in Gastown and onto a fantastic lunch at Rodney's Oyster House in Yaletown.

In the evening we met Fran and Denis Berube at the Water Street Cafe in historic Gastown , and the conversation was so enjoyable that we parted without any photographic evidence of our meeting. Shame!!

Arrival Friday 17th August

Mark met us at the airport and gave us an insiders tour of

Vancouver highlights & a top eating spot!!

Mark took us to the revolving restaurant atop the Harbour Centre .. we all settled for salmon meals

and these proved to be delicious choices. Afterwards a drive to Marcello's Ristorante

for coffee and dessert rounded off a perfect first day in Vancouver.
